AgilePM vs PRINCE2 Agile

Overview

At agileKRC, we often receive inquiries about AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile, and which course would be more suitable for an individual: PRINCE2 Agile or AgilePM.

In this article, we aim to provide guidance to help you make an informed decision between the two.

Continue reading to learn more or watch our webinar featuring Keith Richards (Lead Author of PRINCE2 Agile and Lead Author of AgilePM), who explains the distinctions between the two methodologies.

Webinar

In this webinar, Keith offers insights on choosing the most fitting agile project management approach. He discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each methodology and explores the optimal way to manage agile projects regardless of the chosen approach.

Topics addressed in the webinar include:

  • How can you integrate agile project management with Scrum and Kanban?
  • In what ways does an agile project differ from a traditional project? How are they similar?
  • What role does a Project Board or Steering Committee play in an agile setting?
  • Why must the Product Owner role be adapted for project management?
  • How does the Scrum Master role connect with the Project Manager role?
  • How can you ensure that essential agile behaviors are being implemented?
  • Guidance is also provided on the exams for each framework and, crucially, how to pass them!

Understanding AgilePM

AgilePM (Agile Project Management) is an agile project management methodology developed by the Agile Business Consortium (previously known as the DSDM Consortium). It was created specifically to manage agile projects, as many popular agile methods, such as Scrum, do not offer project management capabilities.

AgilePM has two qualifications managed by the accreditation body APMG International:

Exams are administered by PeopleCert on behalf of AXELOS.

PRINCE2 Agile should not be used independently; it is designed to be used alongside PRINCE2. When employing PRINCE2 Agile, you are using PRINCE2 adapted and tailored for an agile context.

Comparing PRINCE2 Agile and AgilePM

While these frameworks differ, they share similarities as both address the need to manage projects in today’s agile-centric world.

Both frameworks include a process/lifecycle, defined roles, deliverable products, and guidance on various tools and techniques. Each is governed by a set of principles or values that enable agile functionality.

Scrum and Kanban

How do Scrum and Kanban fit into this picture? The answer is both yes and no! Scrum and Kanban are not agile project management frameworks, so they cannot manage a project independently. However, they can be integrated into both AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile.

Choosing Between AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile

Both methodologies are proven and have gained credibility in the agile marketplace, where project management is the primary focus. They are not replacements for popular agile methods such as Scrum, as these methods serve a different purpose.

Which is best for individuals?

If you are an individual looking to enhance your CV or expand your skillset, we recommend the following:

  • If you have passed a PRINCE2 exam (either Foundation or Practitioner, even if expired) – opt for PRINCE2 Agile, as it will build upon your existing knowledge and make your PRINCE2 skills more versatile and relevant.
  • If you do not have any PRINCE2 qualifications, it is likely best to choose AgilePM, as it is currently more popular and more frequently mentioned in job postings.

Which is best for organizations?

When deciding between AgilePM or PRINCE2 Agile for your organization, consider your current situation and objectives.

It is impossible to declare one superior to the other, as your organization’s unique circumstances must be taken into account before making a decision. Evaluate your organization’s prevailing work style based on several factors:

  • If your organization primarily uses PRINCE2, adopting PRINCE2 Agile would be the best choice.
  • If your organization has its own agile project management process, it is advisable to consider both frameworks to determine if either offers options to update your existing best practices.
  • If you are planning to adopt an agile project management framework from scratch, AgilePM is slightly quicker and more cost-effective for a credible framework that has been in existence since the mid-1990s.

However, you can still choose PRINCE2 and PRINCE2 Agile as they are more globally recognized and the PRINCE2 Agile guidance offers a more comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of agile practices (including Scrum, Kanban, and Lean Startup).

Alternatives to AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile

In North America, the Project Management Institute’s (PMI) Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) is a popular project management approach.

PMI offers its own agile supplement called PMI-ACP. There are other agile project management frameworks available, although many do not have independently supervised accreditations.
